But outspoken local business, political and religious leaders Yusuf and Estella Shabazz aren’t the only dynamic members of that family. Their daughter, Kalifa Madeena Shabazz, is gaining her own unique reputation in the community.

People are calling her brilliant.

Last week Madeena — the daughter of a former New Black Panther Party leader and a female elder in the male-dominated African Methodist Episcopal Church — graduated with a host of prestigious scholarships and honors from St. Andrew’s, one of Savannah’s most exclusive private schools.

“She’s a straight-A student, extremely motivated, very bright and naturally gifted,” said St. Andrew’s Director of College Counseling Wendy Sutton. “She refuses to do rote memorization just to get a grade. She learns for the sake of learning so she can apply it all to the next level.”

Unconventional wisdom

It was Madeena’s unconventional parents who inspired her success in traditional academic settings.

“They taught me to be focused on my goal,” she said. “And each year my goal was to be at the top of my class.”

Yusuf and Estella Shabazz raised their daughter to be the best.

“Our home is a think tank,” said her father, Yusuf Shabazz.

And the Shabazz’s have given their daughter plenty to think about.

The couple has operated several businesses over the years, including Shabazz Fish restaurant on Victory Drive, a residential contracting business and the Freedom’s Journal newspaper. Over the years their outspoken and often controversial views on political, social and religious issues keep them in the public spotlight.

Both grew up in Savannah and hold degrees in civil engineering technology from Savannah State University.

Estella Shabazz went on to obtain a master of divinity degree from Turner Theological Seminary and a doctorate of ministry from United Theological Seminary. She was ordained as an itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, but after experiencing difficulty there, she founded the New Afrikan Methodist Christian Church.

Discrimination and divisiveness that occurred during Savannah’s racially charged school integration process deeply impacted Yusuf Shabazz. He made it his mission to improve conditions for black Savannahians and do something about deep-seeded academic and financial disparity.
