For Meals on Wheels program, golf tournament is key to fundraising effort
&Mdash; Every week a small group of volunteers go door-to-door in communities throughout Cochise County, delivering meals to elderly people.The deliveries include five days of meals for shut-in senior citizens 60 and older, people identified by case workers as needing meal assistance. Approximately 200 elderly citizens are served by Northern Cochise County Senior Meals, a program of Catholic Community Services. With the exception of Bisbee and Douglas, all of Cochise County is served by the delivery program. The volunteers that deliver the meals are often the only people these seniors see on a regular basis.

People look forward to the tournament every year and the communities we serve have been very generous about supporting the meals program.”On June 18, the Northern Cochise County Senior Meals program is holding its Seventh Annual Senior Meals Fundraising Golf Tournament at Turquoise Hills Golf course, 800 E. Country Club Road in Benson. The $40 per person entry fee includes a cart and lunch.
The tournament is a four-man scramble shotgun start at 8 a.m. and features first-, second- and third-place prizes.
There will be prizes awarded to those who are closest to the pin, along with prizes for the men and women who have the longest drives. In addition, there is a cash prize for anyone who makes a hole-in-one.
Tournament organizers are currently seeking Tee-Box sponsorships at $100 per sign, with all proceeds from the sponsorships going directly to the meals program.
Information for the signs must be received by Friday, June 10, in order to allow time for printing.
There are currently fewer people signed up for the tournament than at this point in previous years, which is a concern, Cotten said.
Along with the golf tournament, other strategies have been implemented to supplement the fundraising efforts for the meals program. Letters seeking support have been sent to private individuals, churches, civic organizations, businesses and city governments. There also is a “sponsor-a-senior-program” where a $25 donation helps pay for meals. The goal is to find 1,000 sponsors to help supplement the meals program for communities throughout Cochise County.
We want to emphasize that all the money we receive stays in Cochise County and supports our meals program,” said Cotten. “We have very little overhead. Between staff and volunteers, there are eight of us, which means the majority of our fundraising goes directly to the meals program.

Food menu cycle
The menu runs on a 15 working day cycle (3 weeks). The cycle runs continuously meaning that you do not receive the same menu items on the first of each month. As an existing client you do not have to redo your selection with every new month, meaning that your selection will be kept on record. You will however, be reminded to check for any changes to the menu, as new menu items are added from time to time. For this you would have to scroll through the menu. The menu items that have been changed will be highlighted and in red to make them easy to find. You would then select the desired item from the pop down and your new menu selection will be saved accordingly. You can also opt for a complete change to your menu selection but please note that the latest selection will be saved.
