Contemporary Art Museum puts new spin on deciphering art

In approaching any work of art, the background and sensibilities of the viewer come into play. That's particularly true of abstract art, which often makes a game of whether any one interpretation may be considered the correct one — or whether such a perspective is even possible or relevant.

But an exhibition on view through Aug. 14 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis puts an intriguing new spin on deciphering the meaning of art.

"Cryptic: The Use of Allegory in Contemporary Art with a Master Class from Goya" features more than 40 paintings, sculptures and videos created by seven artists. Six of them — Folkert de Jong, Hiraki Sawa, Allison Schulnik, Dana Schutz, Javier Téllez and Erika Wanenmacher — are still active.

The seventh is the great Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, whose influence on modern art is among the exhibition's themes. Goya is represented by etchings from the series "Los Caprichos" (1797-98) and "Los Disparates" (1815-23). Made during the repressive Spanish Inquisition, the prints are regarded as coded social critiques.

"If Goya had deliberately and very clearly criticized the nobility and the church, he would have been immediately hauled off to prison," Laura Steward, curator of the exhibition, said from Santa Fe, N.M. "He had to leave things open enough so that people could read into (his art) what they chose to."

While the prints depict the folksier side of Spanish life, they are also examples of allegory, in which an abstract idea is made concrete through art.

Looking at the Statue of Liberty, Steward said, "We understand that it's not just a lady with a torch."

Accordingly, "Cryptic" explores the ways in which artworks "transmit their meaning to other people — and one way is allegory."

Dominic Molon, chief curator of the Contemporary, described the exhibition as "a dialogue between the past and the present that has a very different feel to it. It's almost like an art historical essay, but framed within a space rather than within the pages of a text."

"Cryptic" draws on works from the St. Louis Art Museum, Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, art galleries, private collections and the artists themselves. Of the six contemporary artists included, Schulnik, Schutz and Wanenmacher are Americans. De Jong is a native of the Netherlands and lives in Amsterdam; Sawa was born in Japan and lives in London; and Téllez is a Venezuelan who lives in New York.
