New products at the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show

CJ Wildlife has launched its latest product: mail-order red mason bees to help pollinate the flowers in your garden, and perfect for veg and fruit plots.

We heard about this product earlier in the spring when it first became available and bought a pack of 15 cocoons for £14.95 and a nest for £9.99. The cocoons, safely enclosed in their hatching tube, arrived in the post in March. The whole tube is placed inside the bee nest box with the lid off and, a few weeks later, the bees emerge. Bees are hard to keep an eye on once they have hatched, but our cocoons are no longer in the hatching tube, which is a good sign that our bees are out and about in the garden.

Red mason bees are used in commercial fruit farming to help increase pollination and fruit yield. They hatch earlier than other types of bee, coinciding with the fruit blossoms, making them the best type of bee for this purpose. 

At nearly £25 (including nest) to add 15 bees to your garden, they are extremely expensive.

Short-listed for ‘Chelsea Flower Show Product of the Year’, this cordless chainsaw from Bosch is the brand’s first Lithium-ion powered battery model, designed to be lightweight, easy to use and eco-friendly. Lithium-ion batteries are the next big thing in power tools, being quick to charge and supplying the same staying power as petrol. And, at about the same weight as an electric chainsaw, it’s comfortable to use for longer.

The latest technology comes at a price, though. This chainsaw retails at £359.99, which is about the same price as a professional chainsaw.

Another nominee for the ‘Product of the Year’ prize, Burgon & Ball has teamed up with designer Sophie Conran to make this new range of stainless-steel hand tools, which have smaller handles designed to be more comfortable for ladies’ hands.

If there ever is a problem they are covered by a lifetime warranty by fiskars, so I don't really see how you could go wrong. There is no way you could break these things under any sort of normal use.
