Sandia's Gemini-Scout: A Rescue Robot Optimized for Mining ...

In AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) Conference massive robots DC this week there are plenty of robots designed to look - and in some cases destroy - human targets. Sandia National Labs chose to go in the opposite direction to their Gemini-Scout, a remote controlled robot stock designed specifically to lead the efforts of search and rescue in the case of a mining disaster.

When the collapse of mines, the main obstacle to a quick search and rescue operation is the lack of information.Mining accidents in general provide a buffet of hazardous conditions: structural weaknesses in the trees themselves, toxic vapors, gases, explosives, flooded tunnels, so rescue crews can not load under such conditions, without recognition appropriate, lest they risk exacerbating the situation by creating a second disaster on top of the first.

Gemini-Scout is designed to deal with these things so he can go fast in a mine, the search for survivors and assess threats to human researchers can get up as quickly as possible.Propulsion and suspension articulated tracks enable it to climb and crawl over a pile of rubble terrain. In the demonstration on the ground at AUVSI, Gemini easily rolled on the stairs and obstacles such as sand and gravel, tight turning circles and raising a mess before climbing on just as easily. We had to climb 45 degrees without serious problems, and less than two meters high it maneuvered in tight spaces with ease.

But more specifically, its goal, the engineers at Sandia said, Gemini-Scout can move in up to 18 inches of water while enjoying the air of toxic fumes (technically it can work through deeper waters, but that would immerse the air sensor on the mast). This is essential because the data they collect air opens the way for manned rescue. They also rescue personnel know they are dealing with explosive methane gas or other flammable vapors.

To that end, electronics Gemini scout are packed in explosion-proof housings. An explosion triggered by something else can turn off the robot, but his own mail will not spark that could trigger a second explosion and complicate a search and rescue.

A thermal imaging camera allows Gemini-Scout search for survivors and two-way radios can communicate with the managers of surviving robot locates. The bot "can even be configured to transport food, air tanks, and other supplies to the trapped miners, or drag them to safety.
