Not quite 10 years ago, Lubbock emblazoned another of those “look at me” spots on the map when it was chosen to display an exhibit directly from the Vatican museums in Rome.
With Gary Edson then in the driver’s seat as director of the Museum of Texas Tech, Lubbock and Tech’s museum were chosen to host an exhibit called “Traditions and Renewal: Medieval Frescoes from the Vatican Museums” from June 1, 2002, through Sept. 15, 2002.
There have been incredible exhibits at the Museum of Texas Tech since that time. In fact, I seriously doubt that museum director and senior curator Eileen Johnson would be able to set up exhibits for all of the artifacts owned and stored at Tech’s museum in my lifetime.
This museum always will be a place of wonders.
But for more than five months, as much as I always enjoy specific manner of visual art, as much as children love re-visiting those dinosaurs and also were entranced by a visual history of wedding gowns, even with all that — I’m certain that the Museum of Texas Tech’s lure has been a touring exhibit placed into motion by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit was called “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race.” Yes, it reflected an ugly, prejudicial regime in Nazi Germany, but those who walked in expecting to see only Jewish prisoners forced into freight cars, concentration camps and deadly showers were mistaken. A spotlight was aimed at the issue of eugenics.
“Creating the Master Race” included a list of those whose afflictions or characteristics would detract from the creation of a master race, right down to mental and physical handicaps. (One example: Been experiencing depression? You’re on the list.)
What’s that phrase? Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it?
That's not why I started taking my granddaughters to museums years. We were looking for another fun thing to do. Hailey, in particular, has an artistic gift, and she and her younger sister Tabitha have a great time not only to explore the museums, but also to speak later on the works of some - ask questions triggered by a painting , or mentioning how he was reminded of something learned at school.
They probably do not yet recognize how they learn while having fun.
