Ice cream cart uses the sun's power to keep things cool
MEDINA — Take a hot, sunny day and a public event and you might find Mike Lyons there, selling ice cream novelties from a cart he calls “Cowboy Ice Cream.”
While that may not be unusual, what makes Lyons’ cart unique is it doesn’t use any power to keep the ice cream cold.
Lyons freezer is powered by solar energy, which is collected by solar panels on the roof, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he said.
Last Sunday, Lyons was set up at Glenwood Lake, where the power model boat races were taking place. While the temperature soared into the 80s, the temperature in his freezer was minus-10 degrees.
Lyons, who also farms and drives a bus for the Medina school system, is big on conserving energy.
“I have wind and solar power on my farm to make some of my own power,” Lyons said.
His freezer is mounted on a cart, which he pulls with his pickup truck.
He is available to go to any event, including company picnics, employee appreciation days or family reunions. He can even run it indoors.
“I will go anywhere and set up,” he said. “Because I don’t need a generator, there is no noise.”
His freezer will hold 800 bars of ice cream. He carries a dozen varieties of Perry’s ice cream novelties, including some approved for schools, non-allergic and non-dairy ones and a special one for dogs.
Lyons said he didn’t want to be traditional with the usual ice cream cart which chases people across the street.
“With this, I can pull up anywhere — in the middle of a park or any event — and run it all day,” he said.
He will be at the Orleans County 4-H Fair all week and the Oak Orchard Lighthouse Day on Aug. 13 at Point Breeze.
