Fiji AG accuses union head of disloyalty
Fiji's interim government, accused the head of the national trade union movement to distort the situation in the country for trade unions abroad.
Félix-Antoine, the national secretary of Fiji Trades Union Congress, was in Australia, New Zealand and Europe seeking support from unions overseas to fight against the alleged draconian new laws limiting the rights union.
Fiji interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khayum accuses Anthony of disloyalty to the country, and potentially endangering the economy of Fiji and threaten jobs.
He said the secretary misled FTUC unions abroad by making them believe that the interim government is anti-union.
Presenter: Bruce Hill
President: Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fiji interim Attorney General
Sayed-KHAIYUM: I think it's a shame that the unions in Australia and New Zealand threaten these kinds of actions and the reason I say that is unfortunate, because they are basing their threats to information that is essentially false. Their information is only from one source, which is Felix Anthony and the other trade unionists, four or five of them who are with him. These trade unionists they've gone into self-preservaiton mode and the TWU from Australia and New Zealand or the equivalent of. If they looked at what the government has done in the past few years, the Bainimarama government, they will see that workers rights in fact have not been eroded. If anything, they have had better salary conditions, wages have improved, so essentially, what is happening is these unionists, Felix Anthony let me tell you about Felix Anthony. Felix Anthony when he was a board member of the Fiji National Provident Fund appointed by the Bainimarama government, everything was OK for him. As soon as he was no longer on the FNPF Board, suddenly things have gone sour, suddenly the Bainimarama government is anti-workers, when it clearly isn't.
HILL: There have been allegations made that unionists in Fiji have been badly treated by the government, including allegations of actually being assaulted physically?
SAYED-KHAIYUM: The only allegation that I hear about is made by Felix Anthony about himself. What we have said is if Felix Anthony is alleging he was assaulted, then he should report it to the police. Now let me give you a history.
