High school year in review: An A-to-Z recap of 2010-11

Another amazing year in local high school sports recently reached its conclusion, with several record-setting performances and historical achievements inspiring fans and captivating communities.

Now, area graduates are preparing to head off to two- and four-year colleges, and a new fall season looms right around the corner, but the memories of another outstanding year of competition are still topics of conversation during summer vacation or summer school.

Local athletic teams combined to win 28 Southern Section titles, 15 City Section crowns, one regional, one state and two national championships, as well as numerous impressive individual accomplishments in 27 sports.

So, here's an A-to-Z recap of an exceptional 2010-11 school year that was:

is for Ashley Grossman, who fulfilled a career goal by leading Harvard-Westlake to its first Southern Section Div. IV girls' water polo championship. Grossman, a Stanford signee and U.S. junior national team member, anchored a strong lineup that also featured Bella Gonzalez, Morgan Hallock and Princeton commit Camille Hooks and helped the Wolverines defeat Los Osos 10-7 in the final.

is for Baxter, a surname that quickly became a household name not just at Simi Valley, but throughout the state. Among a number of talented local freshman athletes, Simi Valley's Sarah Baxter distinguished herself as the best by not losing a race against high school competition all year en route to setting several records and winning state championships in cross country and the 3,200 meters.

is for courage, demonstrated by several local athletes who rebounded from serious illnesses, injuries or medical conditions to enjoy individual success or lead their teams to championship glory.

Buckley's Ali Guthy, Hart's Nicolette Barreiro, Oaks Christian's Jesse Ryckman, La Reina's Ariana Peschke, Harvard-Westlake's Amy Weissenbach and Saugus' Karis Frankian are just some of the area's many inspirational figures from the past year.

is to duel, as in the final showdown in the stellar record of four-year career in Cleveland and Valerie Orellana Granada Hills' Bianca Valencia City in the pool final section. Both athletes eclipsed the previous record of the City of 100-yard butterfly, but Valencia won the champion Orellana by a margin of 55.85 to 55.93.

is for El Camino Real, which celebrated its 10 football championship girls largest city in "in 11 seasons with a 1-0 quadruple overtime victory over Palisades in the final section.
