VanHoose: Busch's win total slightly empty
It was the 100th NASCAR Busch victory, putting him third on the list of all time NASCAR wins. At least that's what some television commentators have pointed out.
It sounds like a pretty impressive feat, and it is. But that's not entirely accurate.
Busch wins Saturday gave him 100 victories in NASCAR national touring series three. He won 49 races Nationwide, 29 Truck Camping World Series races and 22 Sprint Cup events.
So really, it has 22 wins. It's good enough for 21st on the list of all time NASCAR wins, or at least to the list that counts.
Unlike the greats of the sport, Busch races in almost every NASCAR-sanctioned race on the calendar. Sometimes, he'll race in all three series in one weekend.
Richard Petty never did that. Heck, Richard Petty never won a Nationwide Series or Truck Series race -- the Truck Series didn't even exist yet when Petty retired.
But Petty didn't need to venture outside NASCAR's top division to get his 200 career wins. He was the sport's biggest superstar, and superstars don't hang out in the minor leagues. As much as NASCAR and the TV networks try to sell them differently, that's all the Nationwide and Truck series will ever be.
Looking at it another way, I'm sure Greg Maddux could've won a lot more games if he pitched for the Rome Braves on his nights off from the Atlanta Braves.
Now, don't get mad at Busch for running in all of those extra races and winning a lot of them. Dale Earnhardt won 21 Nationwide races. Darrell Waltrip won 13. But no one factors those wins in with Earnhardt's 76 Cup wins and Waltrip's 84.
Busch may have more combined wins than them, but they have something he doesn't: Sprint Cup championships. And that's how greatness is measured.
Busch can win all the races he wants against lesser competition, but he'll never be a legend until he wins a title against the best of the best. He may never do that until he puts the minor leagues aside and puts all of his focus on the big prize.
Jimmie Johnson has won five Sprint Cup championships in a row and will end his career as one of the greatest drivers of all-time. He doesn't waste his time in the lower ranks. Neither did Jeff Gordon or Rusty Wallace or Bill Elliott.
The one notable driver who did was Mark Martin, who also has 49 Nationwide Series wins. Martin hasn't won a Sprint Cup either.
Busch may have more natural talent than anyone in any field where he races. He's already one of the elite talents in NASCAR's top division -- I'd say the others are Johnson, Gordon and Tony Stewart. Those three others have won a combined 11 Sprint Cup championships.
