Tiger Airways grounded: Virgin offers passengers cheap fares

Virgin has increased capacity and introduced special fares for consumers grounded by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s decision on Friday night to ground the entire Tiger fleet in Australia until July 9.

Tiger customers seeking alternative flights have been directed to Virgin’s site from Tiger’s online site.

Virgin’s website says the fares, costing $100 for flights between Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Tasmania with standard baggage allowance, will be available until July 8, are subject to availability and may not be available on every flight.

All other flights will cost $200.

Virgin has also created a dedicated queue for Tiger passengers already at the airport in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority on Friday night grounded Tiger Airways until July 9 because the airline was viewed as a serious and immediate risk to safety.

It is believed Tiger planes twice breached lowest safe altitudes in recent weeks.

CASA is also understood to have concerns about Tiger management response to pilot training issues at the airline.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has confirmed it is investigating an incident at Avalon Airport, near Geelong, on Thursday night in which a plane is blieved to have dropped 900ft below the 2500ft safe minimum height.

The grounding sparked chaos at airports Australia-wide as up to 7000 passengers scrambled to find alternative arrangements.

Thousands were left stranded after arriving at airports unaware the action had taken place. Many were also left out of pocket after having to pay up to $700 for replacement fares on other airlines, hire cars or catch trains and buses to their destinations.

It was a chaotic start to the the school holidays in southern states.

Families were among the 7000 passengers due to board Tiger flights for the beginning of school holidays in southern states.

Rival airlines rushed to free up extra seats and services with Jetstar and Virgin offering discount fares to Tiger customers hit by the snap decision.

And the ban is set to affect thousands more as CASA considers extending the ban beyond a week.

Aircraft engineers say Tiger's safety problems won't be easily fixed.

Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association secretary Steve Purvinas said he "doubted very much if Tiger would be back in the air in the next few weeks".

im planning to go to Melbourne , Australia and im looking to rent a cheap house or condo or whatever that is something between AUD 300 to AUD 600. So does anybody know? and can u guys suggest what kind of accommodation is good for international student?

Assuming you are meaning per month – there is no chance you will find anything. For a studio apartment you are looking at a minimum of $250 a week (all rentals are listed per week). Houses will be in the $300 per week range if you are looking at 30+ km from Melbourne. Melbourne and Sydney rentals are very expensive. As such unless the student is rich, students always share accommodation with multiple others – in most international cases the lounge room of share accommodation is also used as a bedroom – that is the only way you will get a place for under $200 a week.

Our baby will be about 13 and a half months at the time. As far as accommodation goes, cheaper would be better. My husband and I have done a lot of travelling in our time but havent done any with a baby. We always went on a very tight budget and roughed it, but we probably cant do this with a little one. Any suggestions?

Federation square with its really cheap cinemas, and the stage which regularly holds child friendly performances. Melbourne Zoo is really nice as well as the Melbourne aquarium with its amazingly cute penguins. The Eureaka Skydeck is a great place to go ‘The highest public viewing platform in the southern hemisphere.’ Take a scenic boat ride up and down the Yarra River. Thats just off the top of my head, i’m sure you can find heaps of other things to do as well. Good luck with your journey.
