Critics eat words as improved West Coast Eagles soar
New Cats mentor Chris Scott did not have time to eat anything during the meeting on Friday night as the West Coast turned the tables, defeating Geelong for the first time since 2006.
The beating of 23 goals in Round 13, 2008 was probably the lowest point of tenure as coach John Worsfold. Another 99-point loss in round 22 this season meant Cats beat the Eagles by a combined 234 points in two games.
Worsfold is too busy with a view to look back and was reluctant to rely on past losses to Geelong as an illustration of how his team has come.
"I could not honestly tell you that the cuts were in these games," he said.
In a candid moment on the floor directly after the match, the victory Worsfold describes eight points in particular. He later gave an overview of his love for the club, it was less for 22 of its 25 year history.
"I asked after the game Are you proud of the boys tonight?" Said Worsfold.
"I was proud of them since the day I'm back to coach this group."
Hawthorn legend Leigh Matthews described the improvement of the west coast of this extraordinary year, while veteran Bruce McAvaney appellant stated that the recovery was one of the mysteries of football much of the last 50 years.
With each victory, the negotiating position of Worsfold obtain an extension of three-year contract rather than the two offered him the last time is the building, but he refuses to revel in a resurrection that shall classify the most satisfying achievements personal life.
Asked to describe his emotions, Worsfold said he was eager to go and watch a game the next day WAFL.
"It is quite relentless in this game," he said. "You do not get to sit down and really relax until the season is over, and even then you start to focus on your team and building your team. "
Worsfold did not have time to eat the rolls in the box, either on Friday evening when he was at a demonstration in recent memory as it passed the emotion of a dramatic night.
He joked there was a cockroach running across the bench after slamming his fist into it when Geelong forward Steve Johnson was awarded a controversial free kick behind the play, and appeared visibly distressed as the Eagles slaughtered a plenty of opportunities early in front of goal.
"It was frustrating in that first 10 or 15 minutes when I think they scored three goals, maybe we could have one on the edge," said Worsfold.
