Brewer mum on online sales tax | phoenix, sales, tax - YumaSun
PHOENIX - Someone will have to address the question of Arizona - and others - should be charged sales tax on purchases they make online, the Governor Jan Brewer said Thursday.
But it is not certain that someone must be the state.
The governor's comments came after she visited one of three distribution centers that Amazon.com is already operating in Arizona and the company said it plans to open a fourth at Phoenix.
But the questions are related.Even Don Cardon, Director of the Authority in Arizona business, said the fact that Arizona does not tax Internet sales, unlike some other states, may give a competitive advantage in attracting companies like Amazon.com .
The company itself has taken a hard line on the issue. He announced in late June it was canceling its contracts with approximately 10,000 business partners in California, hours after, Jerry Brown, state governor, signed legislation requiring out of state Retailers that use subsidiaries in the state to collect sales taxes on purchases made by Californians.
RepresentativeJim Weiers, R-Phoenix, has pushed a similar measure this session, only to have it blocked. Brewer asked if the Arizona Retailers should also collect sales taxes in Arizona avoided the question.
"I think, probably, maybe, at some point be resolved," she said. "I am not able now to really talk."
Pressed by the way she wants it "solved," said the Governor that the subject has been around as long as it has been an elected official. This was in 1982 when she was elected to the Legislature, if sales under discussion for taxation in the pre-Internet and telephone were the catalog.
"The discussion was long and protracted," Brewer continued, with no solution. "But we know that we enter this new century of doing business, which I am sure that the federal government will continue to try to answer this question. "
U.S. Supreme Court ruled almost two decades ago that the company must have a physical presence in a state of being required to collect sales taxes.
Instead, most states, including Arizona, require that those who purchase items out of state retailers to voluntarily report purchases and pay state sales tax. This system, however, proved largely unenforceable, with collections much less than they would be if the retailer, whose books can be checked, collected the tax and delivery of product to the state.
