Prom Preview: Q&A with Allison Kane, Prom Advisor

Patch: What is the theme this year? Allison Kane: "One Enchanted Evening." Patch: How do students decide on the theme? AK: There is a committee of students of dance that begins meeting in October. They go through a whole process of hashing theme ideas.After a couple of weeks they decide on their top five dance themes, and they form groups have a theme, set up formal presentations, and present it to the committee of any ball. A lot of times with the vote, things are somewhat based on personal ties and friendships. We want to ensure that the topics are chosen based on the form involved. Patch: What other theme ideas committee has this year? What were some of the themes gone? AK: A "Rock of Ages" theme, "Moulin Rouge" theme, a "Peter Pan" theme.The closest rival was the Moulin Rouge. ... [Historically], there have been topics of ball in all directions. I loved the theme of last year in Casablanca. They did an amazing job, bringing a mixture of Western style of Rick in his coffee and Moroccan influences most of Casablanca itself. Really comfortable, beautiful places for them to have fun and dance as well as relax. A couple of years ago they had "Night of the Red Dragon," which was a more Asian-inspired theme with an amazing temple-like structure and a head of a dragon with smoke coming out of his mouth.

Patch: Some schools have Proms in the dining rooms. Why did the show at AK High School: I graduated by 1999. I think one of my fondest memories is of my last one where the ball was in high school. It provides students with the last memory to have everyone together and party together in high school. Graduation they are all together, but students do not have the chance to mingle much.
