Fort Allen Park: Reclaiming the high ground
"When the guns said the ships to leave," said Dan Haley, gesturing to two cannons perched on the slope, "they left."
Although the fort is no longer necessary for the defense of Portland, Haley said, there is just as valuable as a park, dotted with monuments and offering panoramic views of Portland Harbor, Casco Bay and the ocean beyond.
That's why Friends of the Parkway East intends to devote time and a significant amount of money restoring the park over the next three years to replace the rotten wood cars that take the guns and fixing the landscaping to repair a wrought iron fence and beautify a bandstand.
"It's on the edge of the city," but just a short walk to one of the densest neighborhoods in Portland, said Diane Davison, president of Friends of the Parkway East.
The park, she said, attracts bird watchers, joggers, families and individuals "who just want to come here and watch the bay."
Davison said the city master plan for the Eastern Region is responsible for organizing his walk to help maintain Fort Allen Park. She said the park is not obsolete, though the guns were marked with yellow ribbon on the fourth Monday of July celebration to keep people from climbing on cannons and further damage to the cars .
The guns and cars are a top priority - and among the most expensive parts of the restoration.Haley, a board member of Friends of the Parkway East, said the cars would cost $ 100 000 or more to replace, although the organization hopes to find carriages used as a cheaper alternative.
The other main objectives, Davison said, are fixing the wrought iron fence that runs along the bottom of the park and along a path leading away from Fort Allen and beautification of the bandstand, where the first of a series seven summer concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
The final estimate for the work will not be ready until the fall, when the landscape architects hired by the Friends of the Parkway East to complete their research on the park and identify the most significant characteristics historically restored.
A grant of $ 20 000 Davis Family Foundation is to help pay for architects Martha Lyon and Regina Leonard, who helped design the trails around Fort Allen, to do design work for the restoration.
Lyon said she combing city records and the public library to determine how the region was transformed from a fortress in a park and the site of memorials to the civil war, the USS Portland, USS Maine, the Vietnam War and the September 11 attacks.

ALLEN PARK: City might abolish Downtown Development Authority ...
Have Plante Moran also be the stuff of human resources also eliminate another part-time position. Not what they will do is lay off office workers who live in the city and hire someone as a human does not. Or a bunch of attorney that do not live in the city and use Allen Park as an experiment on how to dissolve a city of 28 million pieces in less than 2 years. "It's an absurd idea! Why would you want the abolition of a DP, which actually provides more money to the city? I do not know why, because the city can not use the money how they want.DDA Act of 1975 allows the DDA to capture tax dollars that would otherwise go to Wayne County. Did you know that Allen Park residents pay taxes to the Wayne County park system and we are not a county park in our city limits? So they reclaim the tax back to our city by the DDA. The DDA uses these funds to improve the area we consider to be downtown. Did you know that they funded the repaving of Ecorse Road under the railway? I think Mr. Tamsen is looking for short term to balance the books at the expense of the DDA. It's not a good thing at all.I think all the rumors is a strategic move to scare the people of AP to vote for the Headlee Override. They tell people they could close the Community Center. They may not have a Parks and Recreation. "Last year, I mentioned that the public needs a reality check and follow what the private sector had to do for years, that is to pass on the costs of health insurance and increases the legacy costs to retirees and other employees for information: .. The private sector workforce pays nearly 20% of their insurance premiums.Fact: Most private health care sector plans now have higher deductibles and copay to help keep the costs of health care down. There are several things that many municipalities could learn from as large as CEO Mullaly (Ford). It was not Mr. B who bought her two Hyndai that helps pay the "legacy costs" of retired Ford (indeed, my father-in-one). It is true as American as my wife just bought a new Ford that can pay these legacy costs. It was also Alan Mullaly who had to make difficult choices in order not to take government money to keep his business afloat. He told the politicians that he did not need their help. Does anyone know how Ford lately? They are even bigger taxpayer Allen Park.
