This year's theme is "Let God's Kingdom Come!" based on a line from The Lord's Prayer: "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven."
"Jehovah's Witnesses believe that this kingdom is the means by which God's purpose for the earth will be carried out," event organizers said. "The convention will focus on Biblical statements revealing how this kingdom will affect dramatic changes on this earth and why individuals need to submit to God's kingdom and its appointed ruler, Christ Jesus."
Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians who use the Bible to teach how to live each day, explained local elder Jordan Walters. He said there is something for everyone at this year's convention, which is free and open to the public, as it is every year. No collection will be taken on any of the three days.
"It's family-oriented, and it gives good practical advice as to how to live," said Walters, 38, who is a computer software programmer when he's not involved in his religious work. Walters said they don't worship on a set day. "Our worship is a way of life so we try to do it every day."
Church officials said there are more than 7.5 million Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide. About 6,500 of them will be attending this weekend's events in Gainesville.
John Pricher, the tourism coordinator with the Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau, said convention attendees spend about $325,000 on hotel rooms throughout Gainesville each year for the convention.
"And they spend about the same amount outside of the room" on food and in shops, Pricher added.
The convention kicks off this morning at 9:20 a.m. and is held each day at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus.
The theme for today's program is "The Kingdom of the Heavens Has Drawn Near." Saturday's theme is "Keep on ... Seeking First the Kingdom and His Righteousness," while Sunday's theme is "There Will Be Richly Supplied to You the Entrance Into the Everlasting Kingdom.
