As Sony enters the Electronic Entertainment Expo this week, much of its game-related buzz surrounds the so-called Next Generation Portable it announced earlier this year. It supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, has a touch screen, uses a control pad and buttons as well as six-axis motion control and its upgraded 3G supports augmented-reality apps. It's supposed to be the follow-up to the PlayStation Portable that's sold nearly 70 million devices worldwide since 2004, but the portable gaming world and Sony's gaming strength aren't what they were seven years ago. Sony's PlayStation 3 sits firmly in third place behind Microsoft's Wii in global console sales. Even when it looks like Sony is ready to make inroads, as it did last year when sales of the Wii began to slip and it showed up at E3 with its PlayStation Move device and "one-for-one" motion control, it gets overshadowed and outsold by the Xbox's Kinect motion capture device. When it just starts beefing up its PlayStation Network offerings, as it did last summer when it introduced the PlayStation Plus subscription service with free downloadable content and automatic updates, it allows hackers access to the personal information of more than 100 million users. The April attacks shut down the PlayStation Network well into May and forced Sony to spend more than $172 million on concessions to users and security updates. That didn't take, as Sony sites have been hit at least four more times since . With the company still reeling from the effects of March's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and posting a $3.2 billion loss for last year, Sony's feeling the heat as it heads to Las Vegas. "Sony's network problems and the lukewarm reception of the Move certainly do not help Sony's momentum," says Jesse Divnich, vice president of capital research for video game market analysis firm EEDAR. "It is safe to assume that Sony is under the most pressure at E3, and if they don't excite gamers at E3, it could considerably hurt their momentum going into the holiday season.
