Painted Pot, Big Dipper see ink in online mags

Local businesses The Painted Pot and Big Dipper Ice Cream have broken out on the national scene after being featured in online publications.

Brianne Harrington, part-owner of the Painted Pot, was interviewed by Catherine Clifford of CNN Money as part of its Father’s Day feature “Dads inspire entrepreneurs.”

“He didn’t so much inspire me as much as make it entirely possible to be in business,” Harrington said in a recent interview.

Her father, Neil, worked for the state for 33 years and basically funded her venture, which she shares with her mother, Kathleen.

Since first opening the store, Neil has been a handyman of sorts and when they moved from the Capital Hill Mall to Last Chance Gulch a little over a year ago, he helped with moving equipment, building shelving and restocking inventory.

Brianne was among five entrepeneurs featured on the website and figures she was picked up because of her work with the Montana Small Business Network, including speaking before the state legislature.

The Painted Pot is a paint-your-own pottery and glass-fusing studio. It carries ceramics that come ready to paint and has refocused from appealing to mostly children with their summer camps and classes to the adult crowds with themes like  girls night out.

The Big Dipper, located at the edge of the downtown walking mall, was mentioned in Sunset’s “Top 41 road food spots in the West.” The list included the best places to buy burgers, tacos and pies across the western states.

The Big Dipper’s original store in Missoula was actually the center of the piece, which was coupled with Gott’s Roadside in St. Helena, Calif., for the place to get the best milkshake.

The story said: “Classic shake shack atmosphere, down to the star-studded Big Dipper neon sign. But the milkshake flavors veer into the intriguingly outré, like Mexican chocolate, cardamom, and chai.”

Helena’s store is the first expansion in the Big Dipper franchise and prides itself on its new and changing flavors.
