'Lemonade Mouth' leaves me wanting more to drink

Based on the book by Mark Peter Hughes, the latest Disney Chanel movie Lemonade Mouth is about the history of the band Lemonade Mouth starring Adam Hicks, Bridgit Mendler, Hayley Kiyoko, Naomi Scott and Blake Michael.

“Be Heard, Be Strong, Be Proud” are lyrics to one of their songs as well as the band motto. The five band members, Stella, Wen, Olivia, Charlie and Mo go to school at Mesa High, where sports takes precedence over everything.

“Sports bring donors, donors bring money and money makes my school run,” said Principal Brenigan. So, all the clubs that don’t bring the school money are banished to the basement. “Unless you’re wearing a varsity jacket or cheerleading skirt you’re pretty much invisible,” said Lyle, a member of the AV club.

That includes the chess club, the AV club, school newspaper, mathletes, Sh akespeare society, ballet and that’s where detention is held as well, which is where Mo, Stella, Wen, Charlie and Olivia meet. After their brief meeting, they form a band called Lemonade Mouth. The band soon discovers the lemonade machine in the basement is being removed because the school has a new sponsor called Turbo Blast, and as part of the school’s contract with Turbo Blast, the school has to get rid of all competing vendors.

At the Halloween Bash, the band protests the removal of the lemonade machine, causing the principal to ban them from playing at Mesa High again. In the book and the movie, the story weaves in and out of the lives of the five band members.

In the book, the story is told by Naomi, Mo’s best friend. In the movie version, the history of Lemonade Mouth is told by Olivia, the band’s singer/songwriter, making the story more personal. The songs reflect the band’s desires and struggles really well. The song “She’s So Gone” is about how Mo is not the same person she was before she joined the band and her relationship with her boyfriend Scott. “More Than A Band” is about the friendship that develops between the five band members.

Although Disney made the movie more appropriate for young viewers, they still showed the importance of the lemonade machine in the basement. Since it’s the only lemonade machine in school, if you were seen drinking lemonade it usually meant you where a part of one of the basement clubs, and that everyone deserves to have a voice and be heard.
