Norwich, state embrace online testing

Hours after a group of eighth-graders at Teachers’ Memorial Middle School took an online district math test last month, immediate results revealed students struggled with multiplying, adding and subtracting fractions.

For eighth-grade teacher Chris Hargus, the quick turnaround was a luxury rarely seen in standardized testing.

“I was able to tweak the lesson plans to make sure the students got the instruction and time they needed to understand fractions,” Hargus said. “When you take a test like that or the Connecticut Mastery Test on paper, you don’t get the results back that quickly.”

Ease, speedy results and quick-turnaround analysis are driving the move toward online testing.

Andrew Kortfelt, in charge of technology integration at Teachers’ Memorial, spent months turning the district’s math test into an online assessment that only half of the eighth-graders at the school have taken.

“It’s the wave of the future,” said Kortfelt, who has the ability to send the test link to every school in the district. “It’s really not something any other geek like myself hasn’t done before. By creating it ourselves, we were able to save thousands of dollars, and students are benefiting.”

Angel Saavedra is an eighth-grader who has taken the online test.

“You don’t have to waste paper,” Angel, 14, said. “And the computer checks the answers by itself.”

Teachers’ Memorial is a step ahead of the state.

In recent years, portions of the CMT have been available online to students with special test accommodations.

But the mathematics online portion of the test has yet to become fully functional.

To work out the kinks, the state turned to several school districts like Norwich and Colchester to participate in an online CMT pilot math test.

“Connecticut is moving toward the goal of having all students tested online (by) 2014-15,” Robert Lucco, chief of the Bureau of Student Assessment, wrote in a letter last month to districts. “By successfully completing this pilot, (the state) hopes to offer districts a choice of mode for their students in the years leading up to the conversion of state testing into an online environment.”

For the last few weeks, groups of students from third to eighth grade have taken the test.

“The students thought it was cool,” said Judy O’Meara, assistant principal at Jack Jackter Intermediate School in Colchester. “Most of the students liked it better than the paper tests.
