Scholarships awarded to tomorrow's leaders

The Fort Gordon Spouses and Civilian Club gave away more than $23,000 during their annual Scholarship and Service Award Banquet held April 29 at Be My Guest in Evans.

The club’s president, Susie Waldman, kicked off the event with a warm welcome and a brief explanation of the significance of the evening’s affairs. “Our members were given an opportunity tonight to meet the recipients of the welfare grants and learn how grateful they are and how this money will benefit our community,” said Susie Waldman, FGSCC president.

“ The scholarship recipients expressed their appreciation to many of us for helping them on the way to accomplish their goals,” added Waldman. “I believe that all the FGSCC members realize that all the hard work it took to raise these funds is going to pay off in many ways in our community and through our future leaders of tomorrow.”

A dinner followed after Joanie Bryant, a FGSCC member and editor of the club’s newsletter, “Magnolia News,” gave the invocation.

Brook Lynn, FGSCC advisor and spouse of Maj. Gen. Alan Lynn, commanding general of the Signal Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon, and Debbie Franco, chairperson of the FGSCC Welfare and Services committee, presented financial grants to select groups following the meal. Twenty-five local organizations received grants: a total of $13,500 was presented to various post and community organizations, area high school Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs, and other military affi liated groups.

The organizations at Fort Gordon which received a share of these charitable financial gifts were the Fort Gordon Fisher House, which supports military families by providing temporary housing while a family members is being treated at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, and the Fort Gordon Youth Challenge Academy or YCA, which provides Georgia’s “At Risk” youth with Academic and Life Skills training. YCA is sponsored by the National Guard.

Fort Gordon Christmas House, which provides toys and food vouchers to approximately 800 military children during the holidays, and Fort Gordon Veterinary Services, which provides a safe and possibly an adoptive environment for animals found on the post, also received financial grants.

The event is designed to test wilderness survival and medical skills. Abinaya Chari, Alexa Rodriguez, Chris Cooper, Lena Ning, Mihail Stojanovski, Mikaela DeVeaux, Omar Shakeel and Ricardo Molero Bravo competed in a 10-mile race that included cycling, orienteering and wilderness emergencies like dehydration and alligator attacks.

In addition to physical stamina, participants are evaluated on their medical knowledge, both in questions posed along the race and in real-life emergencies, where one team member is randomly chosen to feign injury or illness. Participants have to be quick on their feet. In one scenario, Ricardo was carrying the first aid gear, but was then selected to be the victim of an alligator attack. So his teammates had to use what they had on hand – such as a bicycle tire – instead of the first-aid kit.

(No worries about the alligator. It was plastic. But it did manage to eat Omar.
