Garage Sale Profits Will Send Students to Young Life Camp

The road to summer camp is paved with kitchenware and mismatched pieces of furniture. At least that was the case this past weekend, as members of the Hinsdale South Young Life held a three-day garage sale to raise money to send Hinsdale South students to the national Young Life camp, a non-denominational Christian group.

Half-way through the weekend event, more than $2,200 had been collected, said Jen Adair, a former chairwoman for the HSHS Young Life and the leader for this year’s garage sale. She called the event more a fundraiser than a sale.

“A lot of people in this community know about the organization,” Adair said on Saturday. “A man just came up and gave us a $75 donation. Sometimes people just donate because they know it helps kids at the [high] school.”

But nonetheless, Adair said there had been a major clean-out from the first day of the sale. She described furniture lining the sidewalks at the start of the sale, and by Saturday morning only a couch was left.

The sale's proceeds will allow 20 to 25 Hinsdale South Young Life members to attend the nationally run camp.

In a video she had playing in the garage, the Young Life president talks about how “Everything [they] do is focused on Jesus Christ,” and that the camps are designed as a “planned platform to present the gospel [to teenagers].”

Adair said this event alone will not pay for the cost of sending all of the students, and they will be holding other fundraisers to fill in the gaps. The cost for the week of camp is $750 for each student.

Anything not sold in the sale, Adair said, will be donated to certain missions or to the AMVETS.

“We try to get the most out of it,” Adair said.

More than 2,000 high schools in the United States have Young Life branches, and there are approximately 22 Young Life camps in the United States. The Hinsdale South Young Life branch has weekly meetings that are held at houses where students in the group live. The chapter was started in 1998.

The Southampton Fresh AIr Home, an incredible  summer camp for physically challenged children, hosts the Decorators-Designers-Dealers Sale (DDD) every June at the camp in Southampton. The DDD has become quite the go-to event, with a treasure trove of estate items that have been donated throughout the year from posh local estates and decorators for sale at amazing prices. You never know what you will find: vintage boats, a Steinway piano or a Venetian canopy bed-they have all been for sale at the DDD. (One year I brought home a hand painted Babar cupboard, rocking chair and toy chest that Charlotte Ford had commissioned for her grandchildren!)  Furniture, art, table ware and linens are all displayed in beautiful vignettes in tents and the children dorms. Nearly a dozen rooms were installed over several weeks with new items coming in at the last minute that needed to be displayed and prices tagged on every item. As a proud Board Member and decorator myself, I spent two days filling bookcases and curios and arranging tables capes. It was great fun, and of course, I got a sneak peek of all the fabulous items for sale! The doors open at five for the big ticket holders with a sociable line forming at four. If you are looking to furnish a new summer home, this is the time to get to the event!  When the doors open, quiet chaos reigns, with husband/ wife or decorator/client teams scouring the grounds with buying lists in hand.
