Carmina Burana: the rhythms of the Third Reich?

Somewhere in the world every day for the past 30 years, with the Sydney Philharmonia adding its voices to the fray this week and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to follow in June.

As Philharmonia conductor Brett Weymark asserts, "there is more to the music than just the oft-quoted chorus.

"Orff fuses together this amazing medieval text and various techniques inspired by medieval music – dance, drones, folksong elements – with the power of the modern symphony orchestra, chorus and soloists. The result is accessible and instantly appealing."

But can mass-media adoption of the work detract from its effectiveness in live performance? "I don't think its use in advertising can diminish its impact in the concert hall", says Weymark. "If it is a hook by which people can come to love the whole work, that can only be a good thing."

Jakub Hrusa, who will conduct Carmina Burana with the MSO next month, agrees there is much more value in experiencing the entire work live. "Yes, the entrée of the cantata may have lost some of its freshness, but it's still so crushing when you succeed in creating the right tension and atmosphere in concert that no use in advertising is able to compete.

"What compromises the music more, I am sure, are all those performances which are not prepared and presented with a serious approach and intent. It cannot become musical fast-food. That’s my main concern as conductor: to make it really delicious, spicy and quite brave. What I know for sure is that the recipe is excellent; I tasted it couple of times, and it's more than enjoyable!"

Almost every musician who has experienced  Carmina Burana will recall their first taste. For Hrusa, it happened when he was three years old. "My father used to listen to a recording of this piece when working late at night – I remember hearing it through my bedroom door. The result? I was so scared I couldn't sleep without nightmares."

Similarly, Weymark’s long association with the work attests to its prominence in any musician’s consciousness. "I sang it in the Sydney Opera House when I was 15 as part of the Combined Secondary Schools concerts under the baton of Malcolm Hewitt. I have since conducted it many times, played the piano part in an orchestra, sung in the chorus on the ABC Classics recording of the work, and I used to perform the Roasted Swan sticks in the mind. "The chorus needs fantastic enunciation and a good understanding of what they are singing about, from glorious, high love poetry to darn-right rude doggerel: one minute the joys of spring, the next the joys of beer and then the joy of women! It's a great work to do with high school students!

Any fan of Hollywood soundtracks should know composer Carl Orff’s  Carmina Burana ( album ). Countless films and trailers employ it, especially the ominous first movement, “O Fortuna.”

The Carmina Burana, or Codex Buranus, is a medieval manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts dating to about 1230 AD. Several more pages were bound with it into a small folder in the Late Middle Ages.

The authors were theological students who worked within and satirized the Catholic Church. They protested through song, poetry, and performance the growing contradictions within the Church, such as financial abuses and the failure of the Crusades. Pieces also address everyday subjects such as the “fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust.”

The poems and songs were written when Latin was the lingua franca of Western Europe for traveling scholars. Not all were in Medieval Latin, however, and the appearance of regional languages in the manuscripts reflect the travels of the authors, with songs originating from Occitania, France, England, Scotland, Aragon, Castile and the Holy Roman Empire.

In 1803, the codex was discovered among the old papers of a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria. The Carmina Buranastill resides in Germany today in the Bavaria State Library in Munich.

From 1935 to 1936, inspired by the ancient work, Carl Orff composed a cantata showcasing 24 of the poems. [ lyrics and translations (pdf)]

The  Carmina Burana composed by Carl Orff now appears in its entirety on the Free Music Archive in  a performance by the MIT Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. William Cutter in 2006 at MIT. The choir is accompanied by David Collins on piano, and showcases baritones Joshua Li, Stephan Jung, David Cunningham; bass Michael Johnson; tenor Sudeep Agarwala; and soprano Elisabeth Hon.
