Maryland County Acting County Education Officer Mr. Paul Appleton, said schools that operate in heavily populated communities that are hosting the Ivorian refugees in the county were selected to be used for the emergency school program.

He told this paper that the buildings which are also to be used for the regular academic school programs for Liberian students in that part of the county will only open its doors to the Ivorian students during the evening. He named schools in the county that have been selected for the program as Samuel Merriam, . The selected schools are normally used during the morning hours by the Liberian students, but during the evening hours, their doors have to be opened to the refugees.  According to the Acting County Education Officer, his office has been tasked with the responsibility of recruiting qualified Ivorian (school) teachers to teach in the emergency school program. The teachers, according to the Education Officer, will be required to teach the refugee students in keeping with the Ivorian school curriculum and said they also expect to use the Ivorian school calendar of events.

Since the school program was launched, there have been an influx of Ivorian 'French Teachers' to the offices of the CEO'S office seeking recruitment in the program.

the refugee communities to scout students for possible enrollment into the program.

Many of the students who are expected to be enrolled in the emergency school program have already hailed the program describing it as something that will be a great help for them to perpetuate their studies while away from home.

Clarke Janet of CM1 (French grade), one of the expected beneficiaries who spoke to this paper, said the initiative is welcome and commended UNICEF, the Liberian government and other partners for the assistance to get them back in school.

Providing basic education as schools remain closed in Ivory Coast

BOUAKÉ, Ivory Coast (March 24, 2011) — Since last November's disputed presidential election, many schools in Ivory Coast have remained closed. There are now nearly 800,000 children waiting to get back to learning. The impact could be long-term. "This school year is seriously disrupted and if children cannot go to school during a crisis, they are more likely to drop out and never return even when the crisis in over," said Save the Children Country Director Guy Cave.

Once seen as a model in the region for the quality of its education system , civil conflict has engulfed Ivory Coast since 2002. Less than 60% of primary school-aged children enroll each year.

Hostages of political crisis

The effect of the school closures can be seen around the country. In Bouaké, a city in central Ivory Coast, the streets are filled with children who, faced with nowhere to learn, sell goods to earn a little money and help support their family.

Arthur, age 12, is one of them. He is enrolled in Year 6 at the local Lycee Martin Luther King School, but it's been closed since September. In the meantime, he has been selling toiletries from a wheel barrow. Arthur would rather be with his friends in school and continue studying to become an engineer.

"The place of children is in a school where they can learn and feel secure," said UNICEF Representative in Ivory Coast Dr. Agostino Paganini. "Children should not be held hostage of a political conflict and be exposed to recruitment by armed groups, forced labor, sexual violence, abuse, trafficking and diseases."

Temporary Learning Centers

UNICEF, Save the Children and other partners  are working to get children back to school as quickly as possible. Temporary schools have been set up in places such as Duékoué in the west, where 15,000 refugees have been sheltering since January.

These cover only a fraction of the total number of children in need of education, and efforts in the north of the country have been hampered by a call for civil disobedience observed by teachers. It has made the reopening of public schools nearly impossible. An estimated 60% of teachers are not in post due to the growing insecurity.
