Brisbane City Council spouts hot air over whereabouts of $3485 napping chair ...

A cloud of secrecy surrounds the ratepayer-funded leather recliner "based on NASA technology" and bought in late 2008 to let Campbell Newman's driver catch 40 winks when he worked late nights.

Now that Mr Newman has moved to state politics, The Courier-Mail inquired whether the chair was still proving value for money.

The Metronaps "Zero Chair" was bought on the advice of a workplace health and safety report into driver fatigue and promotional material touts its "ideal zero gravity position" which delivers "the optimum mode for napping".

Graham Quirk's office would not grant an interview with the Lord Mayor and only accepted emailed questions.

But emailed responses did not answer specific questions about where the chair was nor when it was last used.

"Nothing has changed since Newman. Same two drivers, same number of hours, same reason for having the chair. It is located in a quiet room for the driver," the spokesman wrote in the email.

Writing in the third person, the spokesman said: "A spokesman for Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Lord Mayor was working the same long hours as his predecessor to ensure ratepayers were getting the best value out of him.

"The spokesman said this meant the Lord Mayor's drivers also worked long hours and the chair ensured they were rested in line with specific workplace health and safety requirements."

The Lord Mayor's drivers can work up to 12 hours a day but the WHS report said naps shouldn't last longer than 20 minutes.

The chair`s a good idea , the man hours investigating if it is used and then the Lord Mayors office dodging a straight answer and not showing a reporter the chair is a waste of time and money . Why not just ask a driver if the chair is used and if it is a benefit . Or is it a `State Secret` and `Not in The Public Interest` to confirm that the chair is doing the job the Public paid out for it to do ? Petty bureaucratic rubbish from the Lord Mayors office .
