But Tuesday, they received one.
The Yankton congregation was named one of the 15 winners nationwide of the 2011 Department of Defense (DoD) Freedom Award. The award is the DoD’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.
In the process, St. John’s becomes the first church to win the Freedom Award. Only 145 employers have won the award, instituted in 1996 under the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
St. John’s was chosen from among 4,049 nominations submitted by Guard and Reserve service members or their families. The selection board consisted of senior DoD officials, business leaders and prior award winners.
The church will receive its award at a Sept. 22 ceremony in Washington, D.C. Last year, the honorees met privately with Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Robert Gates prior to the ceremony.
“(The congregation) didn’t do this to win an award. In fact, they didn’t know about the award,” he said. “We were just encouraged to nominate our employers. St. John’s has been giving me this support for the last 20 years.”
In fact, Gunderson’s military service has played a key role since his arrival at the church.
“Recently, one member said they called me (as a pastor) because I was serving in the National Guard, and that was important to them,” he said.
By supporting Gunderson’s deployment, St. John’s was merely doing what it thought was right, said the associate pastor, the Rev. Steve Weispfennig.
“We never thought we were doing anything extraordinary. It was other people who determined that what we were doing was quite exceptional,” Weispfennig said.
“The person who put together our packet at the state level was always optimistic, but we never thought we would get chosen out of 4,000 (nominations).”
St. John’s was chosen in the “small employer” division with fewer than 500 employees.
When looking at the Freedom Award recipients, the congregation found itself among some heavy hitters, said church council president John Marquardt.
“A lot of people don’t look at a church as an employer,” he said. “We got a list of the other businesses that were winners. It was just outstanding how St. John’s Lutheran and Yankton, South Dakota, were companions with General Motors and 3M, which are major corporations.
