Review: Broadway takes aim at religion and finds lots of heart

NEW YORK -- Mormons might want to hug those "South Park" guys.

Thanks to "The Book of Mormon," their big, bold -- frequently profane -- musical, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have done more to explain the religion than any number of missionaries in far-flung places. Sure, there are gentle jabs here and there. But for the most part, the show celebrates the religion's basic tenets and its followers' underlying goodness.

It's a hit -- a huge hit -- that's drawing masses to Broadway. While there, fans are finding other shows to embrace -- like "Sister Act," a gentler nudge at the Roman Catholic religion; "War Horse," a magnificent marriage of acting and puppetry; "Jerusalem," a tour de force for star Mark Rylance; "The Normal Heart," a heartbreaking return to a powerful AIDS drama from the 1980s; and "Catch Me If You Can," a breezy musical that does what Leonardo Di Caprio's film couldn't.

Add in revivals of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (starring "Harry Potter's" Daniel Radcliffe), "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Born Yesterday" and "Anything Goes," plays from a handful of new voices and a musical version of "Spider-Man" that -- one day -- may open and there's plenty to see on Broadway.

The hot ticket, though, is "The Book of Mormon," a show even scalpers can't get their hands on.

'The Book of Mormon' finds its religion

The minute a woman dressed as Rafiki arrives to bid two missionaries farewell, you know "The Book of Mormon" isn't going to be like any musical you've seen.

Sure, the show's structure is so traditional it practically bows at the heels of Rodgers and Hammerstein. But its ability to ignore other conventions and embrace taboos makes this show a must-see.

Written by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and "Avenue Q" vet Robert Lopez, the musical attempts to explain the finer points of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its method? Send two missionaries to Uganda where they're charged with spreading the word.

Unfortunately, the natives aren't very receptive. When the two (Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad) arrive, they find a land that's hardly home to "The Lion King." Friendly singing and dancing? Ask them what the lyrics mean and you discover a different side of "Hakuna Matata."

Two outlooks -- the missionaries' and the natives' -- collide in a hilarious confrontation of world views. While the show doesn't really need some of its Mormon pageants (they're inserted to tell us the "real" story of the religion), they do give directors Trey Parker and Casey Nicholaw the funniest moment in years when converts perform their version of The Book of Mormon for church leaders. Like the "Springtime for Hitler" number in "The Producers," it's a jaw-dropping scene that's so funny it makes your cheeks hurt.

Review: Broadway takes aim at religion and finds lots of heart

A rather elementary script by Nick Stafford makes you think "WarHorse" is nothing more than a children's show. But then you catch sight of those huge horses -- puppet horses -- and you realize this is a drama able to move everyone.

Ratcheting up the drama, Marcus Mumford delivered lyrics like soliloquies - such as his final spoken lines on regular-set-closer "Dust Bowl Dance" - so that I came to imagine Mumford as cousin to Colin Meloy: still bookish, but more accessible in his

As a music drama, however, David Comes to Life never does. Its characters are flat abstractions. Their trials and dilemmas have no more definition than those of a schematic Hollywood weepie. The disc doesn't even succeed at conveying the full outlines
