Rialto officer, attorney charged in bribe scheme
A Southern California police officer and a defense attorney have been indicted by a federal grand jury in an alleged bribery scheme designed to help the attorney's client, the U.S. attorney's office said Monday.Rialto police Officer Aaron Scott Vigil, 41, of Highland and attorney Lawrence Anthony Witsoe, 67, of Mission Viejo, were to appear in court Monday.
It wasn't immediately clear if the men, who were arrested Monday, had retained attorneys before their first court appearance. Witsoe did not return a message left at his office. A home listing for Vigil was busy, and no one answered at a home number for Witsoe.
The indictment alleges Vigil accepted a $2,500 bribe from Witsoe in exchange for falsely telling the Orange County district attorney's office that Witsoe's client had helped as an informant on a federal drug case.
Vigil told the district attorney's office that Witsoe's client had provided information that led the Drug Enforcement Administration to seize $110,000 in drug money.
The U.S. attorney's office says the district attorney's office later dismissed the case and Vigil received the bribe payment.
Both men are charged with conspiracy and public official bribery.
If convicted, Vigil faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and Witsoe faces a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison.
