“Right now trendy is what you would consider ‘urban,’” says Ruth Smith, color coordinator, decorator and in-home consultant for Dellert’s Paint and Wallpaper at 1627 S. MacArthur Blvd. in Springfield. “We went through a stage where everybody was doing that Tuscan feel with the golds, greens and rusts. Now we’re going more urban with the grays, deep, deep purples with black-gray undertones, more of that New York loft look.  “Contractors of spec houses are going with khakis and simple beiges because they seem to think it is easier to sell if they don’t put a lot of color in it,” Smith says. “A lot of times when people come in to pick out colors for their new home, I try to steer them toward neutrals until they’ve lived in the house for a while because you need to get a feel for the rooms in the house and the new furniture.” “The only things I don’t like to use in bathrooms are greens and yellows. That’s because it reflects into the mirror and changes your complexion,” Smith says. “I like using beiges, peaches, some shades of pink, things that will complement the skin tone. Of course, if it is a bathroom that is basically masculine, then anything goes.
