From the moment Simon met Garfunkle in middle school, the two were off and running on their way to stardom – their song “Hey, Schoolgirl” hit number 49 on the pop charts when Simon was 16.
Simon’s knack for writing works of art at such a young age always blew me away, as did the consistency of quality as the years went by. Although he hit a musical dry spell in the early 80s, Graceland won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1986 and Record of the Year in 1987, he was passing his mid-40s.
Unlike most of us poor musicians, worried about where the next check is coming from, Simon had the luxury of spending long periods of time all over the world, where he deeply studied the rhythms of several cultures and widened the circle of musicians featured on his tracks.

Simon’s new album was released on the Concord Music Group label, a record company created upon the merger of Concord and Fantasy Records. Concord Records began life as Concord Jazz in 1972, in you-guessed-it, neighboring Concord by the guy who founded the Concord Jazz Festival, Carl Jefferson. Having lived my entire life in the East Bay, I remember sitting in Concord Community Park watching Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass while eating a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken with my dad on a Wednesday evening.
