High Point prepares for prohibition of e-waste in landfills

HIGH POINT (MCT) — A law taking effect in a little less than a month will end the practice of dumping old computer equipment and TV sets in North Carolina landfills.

The law, passed last year by the General Assembly, will take effect July 1 and covers computer equipment including laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, scanners, and accessories such as mice and keyboards, according to the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The implementation of the law has counties, municipalities and nonprofit groups gearing up to help the public adjust to recycling instead of the long-standing practice of placing broken or outdated computer equipment or TV sets on the curbside for trash pickup.

"We've already been preparing for it," said Richard McMillan, assistant director of the city of High Point Public Services Department.

The city will hold one of its regular household and hazardous waste collection days from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 18 at Mendenhall Station, the furniture market transportation terminal downtown between the International Home Furnishings Center and Showplace. Residents can drop off items such as electronics, household waste, tires and large appliances.

To prepare for the new law, city officials are talking with an electronics recycler that would provide a truck for collection of computer equipment and TV sets, McMillan said. The city's goal is to set up a computer equipment and televisions recycling effort that "breaks neutral" in terms of cost, he said.

One benefit of the law should be to extend the life of landfills by eliminating the load of computer equipment and television sets, McMillan said.

"In the past, people would put a big TV out by the street. We'd come by and pick it up, throw it in the garbage truck and take it to the landfill. Now, effective July 1, we're not going to do that," McMillan said.

The new law will prompt Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina to step up promotion of Reconnect, a no-charge computer recycling program. For several years in the Triad, Goodwill outlets have accepted and sorted donated computer equipment, which is recycled through a cooperative arrangement with Dell Inc.

Goodwill also is seeking arrangements with other groups to recycle or find other uses for donated TV sets, especially old-line analog televisions, said Christopher Gorham, director of marketing/community relations.

"We want to extend the life of something and keep it out of the landfill," Gorham said.
